Book Sorting Automation Systems

MachSoft has developed two book-sorting configurations that bring together custom conveyors, sorting gates, controls and an operator interface. With suitable mechanical and control design, the same approach can also be adapted to small-parcel sorting, e-commerce fulfillment and other material-handling applications.

MECHANICS · CONTROL · SOFTWARE

Built around the sorting workflow

The system brings mechanical handling, gate actuation, machine controls and an operator interface together around one operating workflow. Sorting rules can be configured around operational needs and the selected setup.

Where the required data source and interface are available, sorting rules can use external marketplace information, such as selling-price data. Integration scope is defined by data access and the technical requirements of the installation.

ADAPTABLE SORTING ARCHITECTURE

Beyond books: sorting and material flow

The core approach—controlled feeding, rule-based identification, actuated routing and software integration—is not limited to books. With the right mechanical arrangement and control logic, it can be adapted to other products and operational flows.

01

Small-parcel sorting

Direct parcels to defined lanes, destinations or collection points based on the required routing rules.

02

E-commerce fulfillment

Support product, package or order-group sorting within a wider fulfillment workflow.

03

Custom material handling

Move and route different items between stations, conveyors or collection areas around the process requirements.

Each application is engineered around item dimensions and weight, feed consistency, target cycle time, safety requirements and the surrounding equipment.

APPLICATION TRIAL WITH DIFFERENT ITEMS

Sorter trials with small parcels

Alongside our book-sorting projects, we have also carried out trials involving the conveying and routing of parcel packages. This is one example of evaluating how the sorting and control approach can be adapted to different item formats.

For each new application, the mechanical arrangement, routing method and control logic are defined around the item characteristics and operational flow.

TWO CONFIGURATIONS

Different gate actuation, shared sorting objective

The videos below show examples of different gate-actuation options. The appropriate mechanical arrangement and control approach are selected for the operational requirements.

CONFIGURATION 01

Pneumatic gate mechanism

A pneumatic actuation approach for directing books according to configured sorting rules. Gate count, feed arrangement and downstream handling are specific to the installation.

CONFIGURATION 02

Electric stepper-motor drive

An electrically driven gate arrangement offering a different motion-control option. Movement sequences, operator interaction and software interfaces are coordinated with the selected machine configuration.

SYSTEM CAPABILITIES

Mechanical equipment and software working together

01

Custom sorting logic

Sorting rules are defined around the required workflow and the data available to the system.

02

Operator interface

A tailored user interface supports the machine's operation, configuration and operator interaction.

03

Third-party data integration

Marketplace or other external data sources can be integrated when the required interfaces and data access are available.

04

Integrated engineering

Mechanical handling, actuation, controls, automation and software are coordinated within the agreed project scope.

SCANNING RATE

Multiple speed configurations

The machine can operate at different speed configurations. At the maximum-speed configuration, it can scan up to 7,200 books per hour. The appropriate operating speed is selected according to the feed arrangement, book flow and operational requirements.
